2007: the year that was

Man, it's already the end of the year. Seems like only yesterday, I was making my first blog post.

Well, let's review what's happened in the half-year I've had this blog.

I was glad JubileeJAM! came back, but not for the price.

Grossed out some readers

Said goodbye to one vehicle and hello to a new ride.

Began my picks list. How'd I do? Something like 62-26. I'm not sure about the accuracy of the numbers, but since most of the games were slam dunks, it's not that difficult to pick right more than not.

Just for the heck of it: Alabama lost to Louisiana-Monroe.

My other football team, the mighty Weir Lions, had a disappointing season. They finished 12-2. Disappointing? Yes. They lost in the south state championship game to Puckett by one point. Then Puckett goes and lays an egg against Ray Brooks in the 1A championship game.

Oh yeah, there was this football game MSU participated in. I was there. It was great. I meant to post details of our adventure, but just didn't get around to doing it.

There was one other thing that affected my year: work. Now that I've had a few days off, I'll start the new year with new ideas and plans for new features.

Blog-wise, there wasn't a whole lot else to go over. Random crap here and there. Nothing great.

But what would a year-end post be without year-end lists? Here goes:

TV

Naturally, I'm talking about Heroes. While many panned the final episode, even the whole second season, I still thought it was better than most other shows out there. The writer's strike didn't exactly help though.

Comedy juggernaut The Office continued ruling. Dwight v. Andy is the storyline I want to see. 30 Rock stepped up as one of my must-records. My Name Is Earl better find a way to rebound, because I think it's fallen lately.

CBS dramas have really gotten me hooked. The lineup of Criminal Minds and CSI:NY is also on the must-record list. CSI: is still recorded, but it's not quite as good as it has been.

Not to be outdone, but as long as Law And Order:SVU employs Mariska, I'll record it. Plus, it's a good show.

Movies

Never got out to see any movies this year. Well, I did see ATHF:MFFT. I may have been one of about 10 people in the metro area to see it.

Music

No, I'm not going to do a best of '07 music list. While I'm using other best of lists to get the songs, I'm not just copy/pasting. I'm just going to list the songs I liked from the past year.

"Lazy Eye" - Silversun Pickups
"Phantom Limb" - The Shins
"All The Same" - Sick Puppies
"Icky Thump" - The White Stripes
"Bleed It Out" - Linkin Park
"Dashboard" - Modest Mouse
"Until The End" - Breaking Benjamin
"Ready To Fall" - Rise Against
"Teenagers" - My Chemical Romance
"Wolf Like Me" - TV On The Radio
"Intervention" - Arcade Fire
"The Pretender" - Foo Fighters
"You're Right" - Chevelle

I'm sure there are a lot more, but I can't think of them and it's taking too long to find them.

I can't think of anything else to add to this last entry of 2007. So I'll end on this note: I'm planning on completely redoing the look of this blog.

Happy New Year.

Visiting family

Since the work schedules had my sister and I in town for Christmas, the parents and our grandmother made the trip down here for Christmas Day. We ate some. I say some because someone forgot the dressing back home (thanks mom) and someone forgot to get rolls (thanks people at work that kept me two hours longer than I was supposed to be there).

Exchanged a few gifts. My gifts were mostly of the room redecoration variety. Did get one surprise in a new pair of shoes. I guess you can count my Liberty Bowl ticket as a gift as well. Wonder what my gift was to the family? Simple. The fact that I'm still employed.

So that was Christmas Day. Simple, basic, somewhat hassle-free. The way I like it.

Found out that one of my cousins was going to be visiting his dad for Christmas, which meant he was going to be traveling up towards Weir to visit our granddad. Figured I should head home to see him. It was him, his wife and daughter. I can't remember the last time I saw him and for some reason, don't recall meeting the wife and daughter at any point.

They got in that afternoon. Spent the time sitting around chatting, listening to stories of a cruise they took a while back. Our aunt was going through old pictures to show us photos of our parents as kids. Always good for a laugh or three.

It was a good couple of days.

After who knows how long, the walls in our house are finally getting that new coat of paint that had been planned. I did my part. I stayed out of the way.

I just hope that the fumes inhaled tonight don't affect my work tomorrow. Heck, they might even enhance my abilities at work.

The Company Dime

A rare occasion, but always one we look forward to. Those times when the bosses say 'good job everyone' by planning a dinner at a nice restaurant. Tonight, it was Monte's Steak and Seafood. Oh my. I went with the seafood portion of the name and had the stuffed salmon. To quote my ideal woman: Yum-O!

Sorry Chris (our waiter), but I can't afford to stop by there whenever I want. Well, I might have to swing in one day to get some cheese fritters. Those things were good.

Now if I can find a way to where they treat us to dinner more often. But that might mean more work. Oh well, it was a thought.

My weekend

An interesting one filled with football (duh), worship and culture. Yeah that's right, I said culture.

As my boy James mentions, this past weekend had the MHSAA football championship games. Since I didn't have a dog (or in this case, lion) in the race, I really didn't care for following the games. But I did get sucked into two of them.

The 5A game Friday night pitted the University of South Panola against George County. For the nearly three quarters, USP toyed with GC. Up 21-0 easily, USP felt they had the victory sealed. Too bad GC kept playing football. Early in the fourth quarter, I drove through the Back Yard Burger there by the stadium. I saw people leaving, so I assumed the game was over. Boy, was I wrong.

George County fought back and cut the lead to 28-21 with time running out. They line up for an onside kick and pull it off. The USP player muffed it and GC had possession with time to drive and tie the game. But they couldn't pull off the miracle tie. USP held on for their 5th straight title.

Saturday morning, the 1A game pitted Ray Brooks against Puckett. Puckett got to Jackson through Weir (grrr) and Ray Brooks got to Jackson because Weir was moved to the south half this season. I didn't care to watch the game, but since my dad wanted to watch it, we kept it on. I only sat down to watch the fourth quarter (notice a pattern?). Puckett looked to be cruising towards the win. Brooks had the ball inside their own 10, until they fumbled it away.

So all Puckett has to do is punch it in, right? Well, Brooks stood tough. Held Puckett out of the endzone on four tries. Brooks gets the ball back on their own one yard line. Two plays later, an 88-yard TD run puts Brooks ahead. It was a heck of a play.

Puckett gets the ball back, but an interception returned for a touchdown seals the Ray Brooks win.

Dear Brooks, you're welcome. (yes, I'm bitter)

Ok, enough football. Time for the main event of the weekend. My parents and grandmother came down Saturday for Carols By Candlelight. As always, it was awesome. Great singing. Great performances. Great everything.

Well, not everything involving Carols was great. The trip to the church was the worst traffic clusterf- mess I've seen in quite some time. First, there was a wreck on High Street. Second, the traffic from the Christmas parade earlier was leaving the fairgrounds. Third, every main road into and out of town seemed to be blocked off. Morons. I'm going to blame Frank and not Mac for this.

So after fighting the urge to kill idiots on the roads, we got to FBCJ with enough time to park and find a seat. As mentioned, the performances were great. Especially the kids. If you get a chance to watch it, watch it.

But wait, what is the culture I mention earlier? I'm getting to it. (you're still reading this far down?)

Friday at work, HR (I assume) offered free tickets to New Stage Theatre's performance of 'A Christmas Carol'. Before you go off, no, I don't hate stage or plays or anything like that. True, it's not the first thing on my list of things to do, or even 10th on the list.

A friend of a co-worker won four free tickets. She and her husband were going, which left two tickets. She offered them to my co-worker, who was asking others if they wanted the ticket. No one else was able to go. I may not have been formally asked since I was scheduled to work that night, but she gave me the ticket anyway and said if I wanted to, to come on down. After thinking about it, watching a play was infinitely better than staring at a computer screen. So I went.

I've been to New Stage before. Ok, once before. But I still remember it. Well, not the play, but I do remember they had Moon Pies and RC Coca Cola during intermission. Of course, I had to get a Moon Pie and RC Coca Cola because Mr. Cutts wouldn't have it any other way.

And yes, I enjoyed the performance. The actor playing Scrooge may have been a bit over the top, but the character of Scrooge is over the top. I think we even witnessed a stage blooper and a bit of improv.

So, I'd like to thank Super Chick for the ticket.

I'm tired of typing so, if you've read this far, why?

Yeah, that's right. My dentist is now also checking patient's blood pressure. Don't remember what mine was, but they said it would be better if it were lower.

So let's see, lowering my blood pressure? Well, I have been eating Honey Nut Cheerios for breakfast lately. Except for now, since I had coupons for Special K, Rice Crispies and such. I do need to do some sort of exercising. Guess I could walk the dog occasionally. Maybe even dust off the bike.

Hmmm, I still have a number of days left for vacation. Bet that would help.

And if you're wondering, normal check-up and cleaning. I need to floss more.

Shame on you, Jennifer Love Hewitt

Jennifer Love Hewitt has something to say (w/pictures)

I saw the pictures a few days ago. My reaction was 'wow'. Then I saw her reaction to some criticism over how she looks in those pictures. My reaction was 'you go, girl'. Ok, not really, but it is nice to see a celebrity say 'this is how I look and I love it'.

Still, it's such a shame. No, not the pictures or her blasting back. Those are, a good thing.

The shame is that she got engaged to someone other than me. I kept holding out hope that one day we would meet and it would be love (heh) at first sight.

Maybe there is still a chance.

Hats off to Puckett

13 - 12

From the description my dad gave me, Weir's quarterback threw three perfect passes early in the game. Problem was that they were all to the same player for Puckett.

Puckett got the early lead on a touchdown drive. Weir got their two scores as a result of fumbles from Puckett deep in their own territory. Late in the game, Weir was stopped on a drive, punted and Puckett drove to score and take the lead. They stopped Weir's next drive and held on to run out the clock.

Well, that's what you do when you're the #1 team in the state. If you can't blow the opposition's doors off, you grind it out and prevail in the end.

It looks like Puckett vs. Ray Brooks for the title next weekend. I'll go ahead and say Puckett takes another title home.

Can't believe I'm not there

Where? Exactly.

I had hoped to be at the game tonight, doing some live blogging and such. But the schedule said no way. So I'll just have to get a score and a recap from my dad later tonight, worse case tomorrow.

Guess I'll just have to wait and watch them play next weekend here in Jackson.

Puckett - 20
Weir - 28

Oh yeah, take that everyone else that's picking Puckett. Remember, they gotta come to our house. You don't just waltz into our house and expect to leave with a win. Oh no. Think you're going to use razzle-dazzle to seal a victory? Think again. Want to use a little smashmouth football? Bring it on.

Payback comes later tonight.

Great places to raise kids - for less

article

#20 on this list: Ackerman, MS. Really? Really?!?

Now, I can't hate on Ackerman too much. I got family that lives there and Weir is about 8 miles away, so I spent a good bit of time there. But listing it as one of the best places to raise kids? That's a stretch.

I wouldn't mind it so much, being from the area, but I doubt you're going to get a regular suburbanite from anywhere in the country to pick up and move there.

During my senior year in high school, we had a new teacher come in through a placement program. He was fresh out of college and ready to go teach. Oh, the college he came from? Harvard. Yes, that Harvard. He grew up in Massachusetts, was used to going to Boston and other towns similar.

Try and imagine his culture shock when he arrived in tiny Weir, MS. We liked him, but he had some mannerisms about him and some of the stories he'd tell, you knew he was a very square peg in a round hole.

Unfortunately, he came down the year a massive tornado ripped through town. Went right through the part of the country he was staying at. To the locals, it was bad, but manageable. To him, it was a nightmare. Factor in the rest of the culture shock and it's not surprising he didn't stay much longer. Too bad, I liked the guy. He told us about Sam Adams beer. No, he didn't give us any, but just mentioned it to us in class one day while talking about where he came from.

Anyway, that's one example of what someone might experience if they say "hey, let's move to this Ackerman, MS".

But I'd be all for an influx of people moving in. It would only help the region.

Weir wins

Took them the second half to wake up and play, but they did what Weir is supposed to do. Shut down the other team and take care of business. Mount Olive has a couple of good players, but they got lucky on their two scores. In the third quarter, Weir dominated. Mount Olive had the ball for a grand total of three plays. Three plays total.

Next week, it's Puckett. Smash mouth football. I plan on being there. And this time, I'll record Weir's entrance to the field. It's awesome.

CSI:'s farewell to Sara was eh. I think it would have been better if it could have been a continuous thing over a few episodes.

The last two Criminal Minds was freakin' awesome.

This week's SVU was meh, but the preview for next week's episode kidnapped my soul and tortures it hourly by forcing it to watch Lifetime. I will either be so relieved or ready to kill depending on how that episode ends.

And just for good measure:

Season-ending picks

Where did the season go? I can't believe that the final games are this weekend. I'm not ready to focus all my attention on basketball.

Oh wait, I don't have to. Why?

MISSISSIPPI STATE IS BOWL ELIGIBLE!!11!~

6 wins so far. 6 freakin' wins. Hardly anyone figured this team would do it. Heck, I'll admit I wasn't one of them. Things looked bleak early on. But this team rallied around each other and the coaches and played some inspired football at times.

Chances are high for a bowl game come late December. 6 wins means they are eligible, not guaranteed. A 7th win guarantees a decent bowl game, likely the Music City in Nashville. At least, I hope so.

So on to this week's games. Final tally of my pitiful picking to come later next week or something.

Arkansas at LSU

The Battle for The Golden Boot. Arkansas comes in with the best player in the country in Darren McFadden and the kookiest fanbase that wants to fire their coach. Can LSU stay focused on the national title game while rumors swirl that their coach is leaving for another job? Since it's in Death Valley ...

Nutty Hogs - 17
Ballsy Tigers - 28

Tennessee at Kentucky

Tennessee needs to win to go to Atlanta for the chance to lose^H^H^Hbattle LSU for the SEC title. Kentucky is looking to win to improve their bowl scenarios.

Big Orange - 38
Big Blue - 35

Wake Forest at Vanderbilt

There's always one meh game, isn't there? Vandy blew their chance at a bowl game last week when they couldn't hold on against Tennessee. A win here gives them six and could vault them above certain other teams (wait for it) for a bowl spot.

Owned by Vandy? - 21
Vandy? - 24

Georgia at Georgia Tech

The Guv's Cup. Hairy dawgs and ramblin' wrecks. A potential blowout.

Hairy - 42
Wrecks - 17

Florida State at Florida

Oh, what this game used to be. Now, it's just fodder for Superman.

F$U - 10
HE15MAN - 35

Clemson at South Carolina

Big game for both teams. Clemson constantly wants to fire their successful coach. USC is free-falling. Winner goes bowling happy. Loser goes into the off-season with lots of questions to answer.

Bowling - 27
Bowling? - 27.5

Alabama at Auburn

LOUISIANA-MONROE?!?!?!

LOUISIANA-MONROE?!?!?! - 24 (and not bowling in favor of Vandy)
Using the other hand - 25

Ole Miss at Mississippi State

The Battle for The Golden Egg. This game hasn't had much riding on it in recent history. Both teams have been stinking to high heaven at times this decade. But this game gives both teams hope. Ole Miss is looking to not finish winless in the SEC. State is looking to move up the bowl chain.

Not since '82 - 17
Not since '00 - 28

Round 2 of 1A playoffs

Let's see how I did last week:

East Webster vs. Broad Street - East Webster
Calhoun City vs. Mound Bayou JFK - Calhoun City
Vardaman vs. Benoit Brooks - Benoit Brooks
Greenville St. Joe vs. Okolona - Okolona
Stringer vs. Weir - Weir, duh
Nanih Wayia vs. Mount Olive - Mount Olive
French Camp vs. Puckett - Puckett
Bogue Chitto vs. Durant - Durant

Missed MB JFK and St. Joe. So on to round 2:

Mound Bayou JFK at East Webster - East Webster
Benoit Brooks at Greenville St. Joe - Brooks
Mount Olive at Weir - I get to see Weir win in person
Durant at Puckett - Puckett

The south championship should just be called 'Prelude To A State Championship'.

Yes, since the game's at Weir, I'll be there. I hope my cell phone is ready for all the live blogging action.

Small town, MS meets Big Sex

So I heard a while back that a national publication was doing a story on my hometown. Not the first time that's happened. Weir's got some pub in the past few years thanks mostly to Roy Oswalt.

This time, it was the same theme: small town, big sports. But the publication was a little different.

For more info on this, read this article and find out what the uproar is about.

Not dead yet

But I sure do feel like it.

Been extremely busy at work and trying to come back to reality outside of it. Spent all day Saturday in Starkville. Nothing major happened. (17-12)

Was finally able to catch up on some TV watching.

- Last week's South Park was about Guitar Hero.

- The CSI:/Without A Trace combo case was pretty good. Never watched Without A Trace before. Doubt that this will get me to start watching it now, but the combo was a nice touch.

- Law & Order: SVU. Thank you WLBT for replaying it. I still can't figure out why election results are more important than my dose of Liv.

- I think my sister deleted Criminal Minds before I could watch it.

- Said it before, but Earl just doesn't seem the same now as it used to.

- The Office continues to rule the TV world.

- While I still like CSI:, CSI:NY is much better than the original.

- Heroes. Still rules. That is all.

- And I end the TV listings on a sad note. I noticed on Yahoo! yesterday that one of their must-see shows this week was a new SpongeBob Squarepants special. I didn't know about it. Now, I'm hoping to catch a repeat.

Yes, I used to watch SpongeBob regularly. FINLAND!

Kentucky at Vanderbilt

Big Blue by two TDs.

Auburn at Georgia

Addictive video games

The writer's strike

If you haven't heard, TV writers in Hollywood and New York are picketing. (links) They want to get paid.

Fine with me. Everyone deserves to get paid what they are worth. I'll stop that thought right now before I get tasered.

The immediate impact of the strike is that late night talk shows have to show reruns. No one to write material, no show. While I don't watch late night TV like in the past, I do watch The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. They are affected as well. So no truthiness for a while.

In the near future, sitcoms and dramas will be affected big time. Reports are coming out that shows like The Office may end their season early. Such a shame to deny people their weekly dose of Dwight K. Schrute.

My Name Is Earl would also be affected. Though personally, while I like the show, it seems like the writers have already gone on strike. Something just doesn't seem right about this season.

What's really going to get me is cutting Heroes short. I read somewhere that the producer will likely rewrite the ending of an upcoming episode and make that the season finale. The way Heroes is setup, the first half of the season is one storyline which leads into the second half for a new storyline. Cutting off mid-story will be a major buzz kill. Plus, there's been talk of a spin-off show that would describe how people got their powers. Now it's being canceled.

And I won't even try to explain what a Mariska Hargitay withdrawal will do to me.

But there is one solution to all this. More reality shows. And there would be one result to this solution. More PlayStation time for me.

Dear executives, PAY YOUR EMPLOYEES. (ouch)

Weekly predictions

MSU is off this week. Still gotta predict the others, so sit back and enjoy. Remember, there is a money-back guarantee.

Weir vs. French Camp

One of the C-L writers tried to make it sound like Weir needs to be wary of French Camp. That would be like a Bear Bryant Alabama team worrying about Mississippi State.

What? MSU did beat Bear once. Doesn't matter. French Camp got their one victory back during the dark days of the '86 boycott.

One win - 10
One more win - 58

It's patsy week in the SEC.

Troy at Georgia

Not quite a patsy - 14
Hunker! - 38

Northwestern La. at Ole Miss

La. Patsy - 0
Near patsy - 21

Tennesse Tech at Auburn

Super Patsy - 0
Ho Hum - 28

Louisiana-Lafayette at Tennessee

La. Patsy - 10
Pastry expert - 42

Now for the non-patsy games.

Vanderbilt at Florida

There is a scenario where all the SEC East teams could finish 4-4 and all would be tied for first place. That requires Vandy to beat Florida.

So close - 17
Too close - 28

South Carolina at Arkansas

Arkansas can be good and they can suck. I hope it alternates week by week and this is a suck weekend (ODL!).

Cocky - 35
Confusing - 21

LSU at Alabama

This game could come down to Les Miles making another "balls for brains" type play. But then again, LSU is that good.

Balls - 27
Bears - 14

Bye vs. Mississippi State

Freshman sensation Wes Carroll continues his streak of consecutive passes without an INT by throwing no picks in no attempts.

How not to win in politics

Talk bad about a group of people, or in the case of Hillary Clinton, an entire state.

For the record, our two-term Lieutenant Governor Amy Tuck may have something to say about that. Heck, if not for the off cycle of offices, she would have a good chance at being elected Governor.

Of course, I doubt Hillary would have had much of a chance in Mississippi anyway. But still, at least try.

Monday night is Must-See-TV

NBC is the place to be on Monday nights.

- Chuck: haven't seen it, so I won't say anything about it.

- Heroes: Seriously, either rent the DVDs or try to catch up online. This show is ruling the airwaves now. Last season, it was all about the heroes discovering their powers and meeting each other, some to fight - at the time - the ultimate evil. Now, the remaining heroes are getting on with their lives in various ways while discovering the previous generation of heroes. And an ultimater evil. They saved the world last season, now what.

- Journeyman: Seriously part 2, give this show a chance. I did and I'm glad. I've only watched the last two episodes but they have both been great.

The first time I mentioned Journeyman, I compared it to Quantum Leap. Well, the similarity is time travel and helping people. The difference is how.

Quantum Leap was about a scientist experimenting with time travel. He'd jump back, find out the situation, help someone, then leap to another time and situation. Journeyman is about a reporter who somehow has the ability to jump to various points in time. Don't know how, since I missed the pilot. His jumps are more random. He can't control it, but does know when it's coming.

For instance, he'll jump back into a situation, usually find out when in time he landed and who he encounters. Then when he comes back, he searches for background info on the person he met and determine what he needs to do when he jumps again. The next time, it might be three years later when he goes back.

It's a good show. Give it a shot. If you don't want to follow the sci-fi part of it, follow the family drama. His wife knows that he jumps through time and can't control it. His jumps have caused some rifts in his current family life. Drama!

So there you have it. Grown-up me has given you two prime-time shows to watch on Monday nights. Not-so-grown-up me would have said in the past "who cares, wrestling is on". Well, those days are gone. Now, it's NBC on Monday nights.

Why is #64 special? Well, it goes with the seasonal theme: football. You see, I was #64 in high school. No, I never scored four touchdowns in one game. But I did block for most of them.

Songs I would have on an iPod

Since I don't own an iPod or any kind of mp3 player, I have to rely on radio and online radio for music during the work day. If I did have a player, here's a sample of current* songs that would be on there.

(note: I'm sure to hear other songs as the week goes on, so this list will be updated as I see fit.)

"Lazy Eye" - Silversun Pickups
"Phantom Limb" - The Shins
"All The Same" - Sick Puppies
"Starlight" - Muse
"Icky Thump" - The White Stripes
"Bleed It Out" - Linkin Park
"Dashboard" - Modest Mouse
"I'm So Sick" - Flyleaf (if I had to pick one)
"Steady As She Goes" - The Raconteurs
"Ready To Fall" - Rise Against
"Standing In The Way Of Control" - The Gossip
"+81" - Deerhoof
"Teenagers" - My Chemical Romance (thanks to Christy for mentioning this earlier today)
"Wolf Like Me" - TV On The Radio
"Down Down Down" - The Presets
"The Good, The Bad & The Queen" - The Good, The Bad & The Queen

One place I've heard a couple of these songs, 'Criminal Minds' on CBS.

* - by current, I mean either new songs from this year or fairly recent songs or just new to me

Short and sweet football picks

Just in time, Weir beats Nanih Waiya.

In SEC play:

ALA at UM - Bama by a close margin.
LSU at UKY - Kentucky is a popular upset pick, but not this time.
USC at UNC - Cocks over Heels.
UGA at VAN - Georgia bounces back easily.
AUB at ARK - If Arkansas was a sane team, maybe. But no, Auburn wins.
TEN at MSU - Oh, I'm picking with my heart instead of my head. MSU wins 29-28.

You want to know how I named this blog?

It's a combination of two things. One, there's an old blues song with "workin' hard in Mississippi" in the chorus. Danged if I can remember the name of the artist. I don't even know if that's the name of the song or not. Just remember hearing it a few times and thinking "yeah, that's my song."

Two, to put it mildly, I'm swamped at work. Haven't had much of a chance to take a break to do me stuff. And no, it's not all Marshall's fault.

When I get finished with these projects, I'll let the faithful know here. But don't hold your breath. Who knows when 'when' will be.

Sitting on the side of Hwy 25 ...

First off, let me warn you that this is a partial football post. It sets up the story.

So State won the elusive 4th game for the first time since 2000. A victory, good food at the tailgate afterwards. Good times.

Around 5:30, my buddy and I head out on our way back to Jackson. Stop in Louisville for gas.

South of Carthage, still a good 25-30 miles to Hwy 43 (to get to my place), the lights in his truck start to go dim. The ABS light comes on. Other warning lights come on. The radio starts to fade. The engine is still going and we're still moving.

Maybe another 5 miles later, after all lights had died, the engine starts sputtering before it finally dies. We get off the road just south of where 25 and 483 intersect. In short, the middle of BFE. This was about 7:30 pm.

My buddy calls AT&T's roadside assistance (since he works for AT&T). It goes something like this:

them: What town are you in?
he: We're not in a town.
them: What mile marker are you at?
he: There are no mile markers on the highways.
them: We need to know where you are located?
he: We're at the 25 and 483 intersection. I have a GPS here. Our lat./long. is ___.
them: What town are you in?

It was almost useless. But finally, they were able to contact a tow truck to come get us. It was 9:00 pm when they arrived. Two good ol' boys about my age. We think one of them has a memory problem because he asked us the same two questions about Croom and MSU at least three times.

During the wait for the tow, one vehicle did stop to check on us. That was nice. We pray for nice things to happen to him and his family. Everyone else that didn't stop, well, we hope for long lines for you at the grocery store.

About an hour later, got to his house and now he has to learn how to replace an alternator.

But hey, MSU is 4-2. And that's all that matters.

A quick catchup post

Maybe this one will get comments.

I went to the Viking Classic golf tournament last weekend. Was given passes to one of the corporate tents. Sweet deal. Free food, A/C, TVs to watch the game, free food.

I do have one gripe about the golfing. There were not enough schedules printed for spectators. I missed following a group around the course because no schedules were available.

As for the game of golf, I need to find a time to hit the links soon.

The DVR is filling up on this week's shows. I have to get better at watching. After stumbling across a review of Heroes online, I sat down last night and watched it. So far, I'm enjoying the way the show is going.

Haven't watched SVU or Bionic Woman yet.

Also, haven't watched the new show Journeyman. Have read that it is quite enjoyable. Kind of a Quantum Leap vibe going with it.

Work has been, well, work. Constantly busy for the most part lately. Projects galore. Which is a good thing.

Speaking of, time to head that way.

Week 1 of the new TV season is done,

and all I can say is "Holy &#!+!"

"Heroes" - If you didn't watch season 1, you may be lost. Supposedly, season 2 is mostly independent of 1, but there are important stories from 1 that have to be known. For instance, how is Hiro in ancient Japan? I may feel about Heroes the way most chic^H^H^Hwomen feel about "Grey's Anatomy". I really really really like this show.

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" - Maybe it's the drama. Maybe it's the crime-solving aspect. Maybe it's Mariska Hargitay. Either way, this is also high on my 'must record' list. The twist on this season's first show wasn't quite as shocking as some in the past. But it was enough.

"The Office" - Support the Rabid

"My Name is Earl" - I feel for Randy.

"Bionic Woman" - I'm giving this one a shot. So far, it looks interesting.

"CSI:NY" - Ok, I understand someone wanting to bring a murderer to justice. But I don't think you hatch an elaborate plan of defacing Lady Liberty and murdering two people to accomplish this. And Montana is cuter than ever.

"CSI:" - Did they find Sara? Surely you've watched it by now.

"Criminal Minds" - Why am I listing this one last? Because the ending of it made me jump off the couch and yell as mentioned above. The case itself was average. Nothing too out of the ordinary. The results afterward was shocking.

Sorry folks

but I gotta get a football post in.

My Weir Lions tasted defeat last week in the match up against their former coach. Too many mistakes led to a Eupora victory. Since it was an out-of-district game, it only stings a little. Plus, I can't feel bad when Coach Graham got a special victory.

This week, Weir gets back into action against McAdams. And by 'back into action', I mean 'rolls'.

Still undefeated - 48
McOuch - 6

Now for some SEC action. Let's see if I can improve my 26-9 record. (Thanks, Bama).

LSU at Tulane

The Battle At The Dome! And by 'battle', I mean 'LSU scrimmage hoping no one gets injured'.

Bayou corndogs - name their score
Bayou victims - name their shutout

Ole Miss at Georgia

One of my buddies was hoping to do a double-header. The MSU game in Columbia, SC and this game between the hedges. Well, his better 7/8ths won't be making the trip, so this game won't be attended. 'Tis a shame, 'cause Athens is a nice place.

Alabama vs. Florida State

Bobby gets to coach against the team he wanted to coach way back when. And I do mean waaaaaay back when. Saint Nick (Roll Tide) is still (Roll Tide) the only (Roll Tide) coach (Roll Tide) for (Roll Tide) Ala (Roll Tide) bama (Roll Tide).

Still (Roll Tide) National (Roll Tide) Champs (Roll Tide) - 27

Auburn at Fl*rida

Poor Tubby. Urban Warfare was pissed when a team he wasn't even coaching lost in Mississippi. Wonder what he's been like this past week when *his* team almost lost in Mississippi.

SEC pickin' review and preview

On the young season, I'm 21-7 in trying to predict winners. Most of them have been easy picks. Some of the 7 incorrect ones were close, except for Urban Warfare. And no thanks to Arkansas and Vandy for making Alabama look good.

A big thank you to my Dawgs for giving me a wrong guess. I figured they would play Auburn close, but fall short in the end. Very glad they proved me wrong. And yes, I was there even though video shows otherwise.

As for this weekend's games, three games with potential for goodness. Three others that should provide needed practice for the respective teams.

Georgia at Alabama

Between the hedges, I likely would have taken the Hairy Dawgs. But the tempting ribs from Dreamland lead me elsewhere.

Too many kegs? - 27
Wake the arroga^H^H^Hghosts - 29

New Mexico State at Auburn

Before the MSU game, I had an Auburn fan tell me that he was more worried about this game than the MSU game.

Los Lobos - 35
THIS IS THE SEC, BROTHER! - 42

Fl*rida at Ole Miss

The O got the troops fired up last year and had LSU on the ropes in Death Valley. Can his wacky ways do the same at home against Urban Warfare?

Uh, no - 56
Missing P-Willie - 3

Kentucky at Arkansas

Big Blue pulled a huge upset in beating Louisville last week. Momentum baby! The Nutt pulled defeat out of his as^H^Hhind end (family show ($1)) when he had the game won in T'town.

Wildcats, no longer that mild - 35
WHAT THE HECK WERE YOU THINKING?!?!?! - 36

South Carolina at LSU

Lucky for Cackolacky, this game isn't at night.

Cockin' for an upset - 17
Ready to knock some co^H^H^H - 34

Arkansas State at Tennessee

Phat Phil's seat is getting hotter and hotter. And there aren't enough McRib's in the world to help him feel better.

Surprised at the # of colleges in Ark. - 14
Out of contention, aGAIN - 31

Gardner-Webb at Miss. State

Losing your starting quarterback is never good. Having a true freshman and an unproven JUCO as your backups isn't any better. They best find some passing mojo this week before heading to Columbia.

Runnin' Bulldogs - 14
Runnin' and better-be-passin' Bulldogs - 35

Off this week, Vandy. Rest easy, soul patrol.

Tonight's high school game o' the week

Weir steps up a class and takes on 2A Eupora. Why is this an intriguing game? Eupora is coached by Junior Graham. Coach Graham is the former Weir head coach. He took the Eupora job after Eupora's coach jumped all the way up to the South Panola job. I'm thinking this was scheduled as a friendly get-together, as a way of letting Coach Graham come back to a warm welcome.

No ill will towards Junior. He did good at Weir. Hope he does just as well at Eupora.

But tonight, it's all Weir.

Bung hole – Victuals on a ship were stored in wooden casks. The stopper in the barrel is called the bung, and the hole is called the bung hole. That’s all. It sounds a lot worse, doesn’t it? On TLAP Day – When dinner is served you’ll make quite an impression when you say, “Well, me hearties, let’s see what crawled out of the bung hole.” That statement will be instantly followed by the sound of people putting down their utensils and pushing themselves away from the table. Great! More for you!

The "It's Almost Too Late" edition of picks

How dare work get in my way of predicting SEC games.

Alabama at Vanderbilt (11:30 a.m. CT / LFS)

Yippee! SEC football is underway. St. Nick goes to Nashville to rape their cattle and steal their women. Yes, that's correct. Why? Because he can.

But he'll lose his first SEC game. Yes, that's also correct.

Bear with him - 20
Easy Like Sunday Morning ($1 to Bubb Rubb) - 21

South Florida at Auburn (8 p.m. CT / ESPN2)

Upset alert! USF is a good team. They beat West Virginia last year and return most of the entire team. Or so the pundits say.

Auburn looked sluggish in their first game. 9th year QB Brandon Cox best get things in high gear real quick like.

Better than K-State - 24
Better than last week - 38

Troy at Florida (6 p.m. CT)

No TV means no shots of Mrs. Meyer or Tebow's girl.

Getting paid - 10
Gettin... uh, nevermind - 49

South Carolina at Georgia (5:45 p.m. ET / ESPN)

Spurrier's team may be cocked but they weren't firing last week. They go between the hedges to try and jump start their season. Kegmaster Matthew Stafford will have the hairy Dawgs ready to uncock the Cocks.

QB questions already? - 17
Look out Florida - 35

Kent State at Kentucky (6 p.m. ET)

Kentucky's getting ready for Louisville. Kent State may help prepare Big Blue's offense, but not their defense.

MACtastic opponent - 13
SECond best team in state - 48

Virginia Tech at LSU (8:15 p.m. CT / ESPN)

Under normal circumstances, this would be a dominate game. But these aren't normal circumstances. LSU fans are being asked to be polite.

LSU's defense won't.

QB issues - 16
Mild week 1 practice - 22

Missouri at Ole Miss (5 p.m. CT)

Let me be the 3789th person to say that this is a MISS-match.

*groan*

That's Mizz to you - 28
Tennessee let Brent go, why? - 10

Southern Miss at Tennessee (7 p.m. ET)

Why isn't this on TV? USM almost always plays the big boys tough and 9 times out of 10, look as if they are about to pull the upset. Only to have the big boy snap out of it and take control of the game. Isn't that right, Bill Callahan?

Best in MS - 27
Phat Phil is no Bill - 28

Mississippi State at Tulane (6 p.m. CT / CSS)

Why *is* this one on TV? Does CSS not want people to watch their station?

1 SEC championship - 15 (defensive or special teams TD plus 8 safeties)
2 SEC championships - 14 (two INTs for TDs)

Let's see if my perfect record remains perfect Sunday.

Fantasy football chat

One of my fantasy football leagues was set for auto-draft. I prefer live drafts, but if that is what they want, fine. Since the league had an odd number of teams, it couldn't get started.

Well, at some point during the past few days, another team joined. So the draft started. Since it's auto-draft, you can rank players if you want.

I check my team and notice I have LaDanian Tomlinson. He's only the #1 fantasy football player. Sweet. I had the #1 pick.

But wait. I had the #2 pick. Then, how did I get LDT?

The team with the #1 pick selected: Chicago's defense.

Oh my. I tried not to make a spectacle of myself at work from laughing so much.

Chicago? #1? Seriously?

2. People that don't signal when changing lanes.

2a. People that don't signal when changing lanes while cutting in front of my by a foot.

3. The douchebag that stopped on the entrance ramp to the interstate the other night, then flew like a bat out of hell passing me just a short ways up the road. Douche on, douche.

4. People that tailgate me for a half mile or so on the interstate, then move over a lane and pass after another half mile, then move back into the same lane by cutting me off by a foot.

That's all, until some other douche does something stupid on the road that pisses me off.

Football predictions review

Well, let's see how my first attempt at prognostication worked out.

Alabama vs. Western Carolina

Predicted: Alabama 38, W Carolina 10

Actual: Alabama 52, W Carolina 6

Ok, so I figured Saint Nick would call off the dogs. Silly me.

Arkansas vs. Troy

Predicted: Arkansas 31, Troy 17

Actual: Arkansas 46, Troy 26

Eh, close enough.

Auburn vs. Kansas State

Predicted: Auburn 42, Kansas State 17

Actual: Auburn 23, Kansas State 13

It was closer than it appears. And it was K State's game to lose. Which they did, with the help from Auburn's all-world defense.

Fl*rida vs. Western Kentucky

Predicted: Fl*rida a lot, Western Kentucky 3

Actual: Florida 49, Western Kentucky 3

What can I say? I'm that good.

Georgia vs. Oklahoma State

Predicted: Georgia 28, Oklahoma State 20

Actual: Georgia 35, Ok State 14

Georgia looks good.

Kentucky vs. Eastern Kentucky

Predicted: Kentucky 49, E Kentucky 14

Actual: Kentucky 50, E Kentucky 10

This will get harder once real teams start playing other real teams.

Ole Miss at Memphis

Predicted: Ole Miss 13, Memphis 12

Actual: Ole Miss 23, Memphis 21

Memphis was thisclose to tying the game at the end, but the Rebels pulled one out.

South Carolina vs. La-Lafayette

Predicted: USC 38, La-Lafayette 7

Actual: USC 28, La-Lafayette 14

Something's not right with that picture.

Tennessee at California

Predicted: Cal 35, Tennessee 28

Actual: Cal 45, Tennessee 31

Heck of a game.

Vanderbilt vs. Richmond

Predicted: Vandy 21, Richmond 0

Actual: Vandy 41, Richmond 17

I envy Vandy football.

Mississippi State vs. LSU

Predicted: LSU 41, MState 17

Actual: LSU 45, MState 0

Not surprised by LSU's offensive output. Utterly disgusted by MState's "offense".

Weir vs. South Leake

Predicted: Weir 34, South Leake 21

Actual: Weir 43, South Leake 0

I should be surprised, but I'm not.

So that's a 12-0 start. Not bad, but then again, no real surprises from week 1. A couple of close games, but the "team that was supposed to win" did win.

Until next time...

Vandalism

Kids these days. They think it's cool to drive around in the dark of night, knock over mailboxes, throw paint on the roads (weird flashback) and TP yards? Well, apparently, there was a group of kids doing that in our neighborhood. Someone from the neighborhood was driving around telling people about it.

The mailboxes and paint in the road? That's bad. TPing someone's yard? Ok, it's annoying when it's your yard, but if that's all that was being done, I wouldn't mind.

But I don't like how they did our yard. No biggie getting most of the TP out of the tree. What got me was that they used good quality TP.

That's just wrong.

Seriously. Kids these days.

Where has the magic gone?

Thanks Croom. MState football is even deader than how you inherited it.

(Editor's note: this is in the 3rd quarter. Rain had a small part of causing the stands to empty. Croom and Henig had a larger part.)

Thank you, CANCUNASS.

Yes, it's time for football. Or as Crazy Ed Orgeron says, FOOBAW!

Tonight, I'll be in Starkville watching LSU scrimmage as they prepare for Virginia Tech ... I mean, as Mississippi State takes on LSU in the season/SEC opener for both teams. Hopefully, my cell phone won't crap out on me and I can snap a few good pics.

Since the 2 Doof, er Daves are retired, I thought about doing a weak attempt at copying them. Well, I've got eleven weeks to perfect it. So here goes.

2 A's Picks The SEC (and Weir High)

Alabama vs. Western Carolina

The first of Saban's 36 national titles at Bama begins with this cupcake. By the way, those 36 titles will come in only 5 seasons. He's that good.

Row Tahd 38, Non-SEC Directional Carolina 10

Arkansas vs. Troy

The Pigs are good and Troy isn't the pushover they used to be. But still ...

sasnakrA 31, Boys 17

Auburn vs. Kansas State

Interesting match-up. K-State is working to get back to winning, something they aren't used to. Auburn is looking to stay healthy through their first four games (sigh).

Plainstigereagles 42, Little Apple 17

Fl*rida vs. Western Kentucky

Zzzzzzzzzz, huh? Oh, the game. Maybe we'll see some camera shots of Tim Tebow's woman.

Urban warfare eleventy billion, Patsy 3

Georgia vs. Oklahoma State

Another Big-12 opponent for the Hairy Dawgs. Should show UGA where they are right off the bat.

Hunkering down 28, Pokes 20

Kentucky vs. Eastern Kentucky

Wow. An inter-squad scrimmage.

Big Blue 49, Directional Blue 14

Ole Miss at Memphis

Two SEC teams open the season on the road. I don't think this one counts.

Yaw yaw yaw 13, Tiger High 12

South Carolina vs. La-Lafayette

I miss the directional Louisiana school names.

Cock-n-Fire 38, La-La 7

Tennessee at California

Now this is what you call a road game. It's also what you call either really confident or really stupid (see: MSU vs. West Virginia).

Wine sippers 35, Shine sippers 28

Vanderbilt vs. Richmond

If this were basketball and about 6 years ago, maybe. But it's football and now. Plus, it's Vanderbilt. Oh, that's right. I can't talk smack about them.

GPA 21, Spiders 0

Mississippi State vs. LSU

I've seen a couple of sites play simulations of this game on the new NCAA Football '08 video game. Most of them all result in the same thing: LSU domination. Unfortunately, I can't link to them since they are member subscription sites.

But I can post results from my own video game experiences on this game. The day I bought the game, I put it in the PS2, set the game to the hardest settings and simulated the upcoming season. The result? MSU 33, LSU 21. My boy VHDawg said the game was defective and I should return it. Later, I ran another simulation and it had MSU winning a defensive battle 10-7.

What should we take from this? Video games programmers don't know diddly poo about football.

Corndogs 41, Whipped Dogs 17

And as a bonus pick, the Mighty Weir Lions (my yang to MSU's yin) begin their quest for a seventh state title. This time, they have to go through the south part of the state. Doesn't matter.

Weir vs. South Leake

I don't know anything about South Leake. But I do know that Weir has a new head coach and a new offensive coach. The head coach, well, all he has to do is manage the game. The offensive coach is former head coach Joe Gant. Coach Gant only has 5 of those state titles.

It's a home game. It's smash-mouth football. It's a thing of beauty.

Big Red 34, Drippy 21

Now let the games begin.

Another missed opportunity

It's bad enough I missed out on the beer-drinking armadillo, now I had another opportunity pass me by.

Earlier this week, I notice a sign posted on a tree out in our neck of the woods. Yeah, you see that every day, right? Well, not a sign like this. It wasn't a political sign. It was advertising a business. And not just any business.

Yard Ninja. It had a drawing of a ninja with sword!

Each night I passed it, I said I'd stop the next day and snap a photo. Well, today, it was gone. Just like a ninja, poof, into thin air.

Things I wished I had a photo of.

On the way home yesterday, my sister noticed a dead armadillo on the side of the road. No big deal around here, right? Well, someone took the time to place a beer can in the dead dillo's rigored front legs. I missed it on the way there, but on the trip back today, sure enough it was still there.

It was raining and traffic on the highway prevented a safe chance to snap a pic. But it would have been so cool.

The end of another long work week.

Projects getting me down. Trying to draw blood from a stone.

Just another week at work.

No better way to end it than with a pint of Ben & Jerry's Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream.

Mmmmmmmmmm, taste the truthiness.

After finishing my 'thank-goodness-it's-Friday' snack, I'll be getting ready to head out for a couple of days. And by 'getting ready', I mean 'goof off on the computer before going to bed'.

Tomorrow is a big day. Going home to 1. go home so my mom will be happy and most importantly 2. celebrate my grandmother's 90th birthday. I think the plan is to go out to eat in Starkville. If her big sister lived here, we'd double the celebration. Sunday is my great aunt's 95th birthday.

I'll share any leftover birthday cake. And by 'share', I mean 'eat it while taunting you'.

Lunch today

Hamil's. First time I've been there since they built the new building.

For a modest price, you can take what you can eat, but you better eat what you take.

And just for the record, the number of people shown in this photo is not indicitive of the number of people in the building. The old location (the shack) was big enough to hold maybe 75 people. The new building, all two floors of it, holds over 200 easily. The place was packed.

The first time I went, some years ago, they had just changed their hours of operation from M-F at lunch to M-Sat. at lunch. Now, they are open Thursday-Saturday evenings, 5-8.

For the few wondering ...

The blog has been quiet for a while. Perhaps too long. I just haven't had much time, nor excitement, to put anything up. Maybe it's the projects at work. Could be the lack of social life getting me down. Football season is fast approaching, but that contributes to the projects and even some depression knowing I'll likely not see competitive football unless I watch it on TV.

Guess I should take Chris Rock's advice: "Why don't you go get kidnapped so you can have some new sh*t to talk about?"

Allow me to go NO MA'AM for a moment

Everything that is wrong with the world can be summed up in this photo:

For more wrongness, visit Hot Chicks with Douchebags. But not at work.

I want to take Matt LeBagg and run him through a grinder so I can harvest his grease for lubricating machinery on a southern dairy farm.

I would spend every waking moment of my life reading Shakespeare to baby goats just for a chance to be in the same room as this goddess.

I hate my life.

Another great show about to say goodbye.

This Sunday, on [adult swim], the last Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law will air. It will be another top-notch 'toon from [as] that will fade into the sunset. When [adult swim] debuted, it was a breath of fresh air. A number of great shows have come through [as] to entertain me.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force (#1 in da hood, G!)
Sealab 2021 (RIP Capt. Murphy)
The Boondocks
Venture Bros.
Home Movies (it's ok)
Metalocalypse
Robot Chicken
The Brak Show (Thundercleese!)
Squidbillies
even running old SGC2C

They made Sunday nights worth staying up for.

Now half of these shows are gone. And the rest are mostly crap. I haven't seen any of the new shows they ran recently. I'm not into anime.

[as] is just not the same.

So long Harvey. You will be missed.

Now if they could just parlay this into a Birdgirl series.

Say hello to my new friend.

Say hello to my new ride. A 2007 Saturn Ion. 5-speed transmission. Up to 35 mpg. More economical than my previous ride. (see sad but happy post below)

Yeah, I wish I could have kept the truck. I picked it for a reason. I was young and stupid and it had a lot of cool features. But for all the right reasons, I had to part ways with it.

I picked this vehicle for a reason. I'm older, a tiny bit less stupid, broke and can be in better shape financially with this vehicle in the long run.

So if you are considering getting a new vehicle, may I recommend a Saturn. And if you do happen to go get one, tell 'em I sent you. (please?)

Farewell, old friend

Been trying to sell my truck for a while now. Not that I wanted to, but more of a necessity. You know, the whole money issue and trying to make ends meet.

I was about to give up. Afraid that I would have to bite the bullet and trade it in, only saving a small amount in the long run.

Then the phone call came. A guy was in an accident recently (not his fault) and was assuming the damage was enough to total his truck. So he began searching for another vehicle. That's when he saw my classified ad. After talking to him, he came to look at the truck and fell in love with it. His wife also liked it (which was half the battle).

Like Tom Petty said, the waiting is the hardest part. Well, today was the end of the waiting. His insurance company gave him the word that the vehicle was totaled, which gave him the opening to buy my truck.

I have had a good feeling about this. Now I'm relieved that it actually happened.

So farewell, old friend. We've been through a lot together. That trip to Cincinnati. The many trips to Starkvegas for footb^H^H^H. I'll miss you.

Maybe someday down the road, I'll find a time when I can get another one like it.

In the meantime, I feel like this guy:

A potential national crisis

Pre-determined amounts of TP?

"Most people will take the amount given," says Richard Thorne, director of the company's washroom business. Waxing philosophical, he adds, "People generally in life will take what you give them."

I don't know if this company was thinking of this for a while or not. I'd like to think that they were. We have those auto-dispensing paper towel machines at work. They are ok, if they work. One is generous and usually dispenses two towels for you.

But auto-dispensing TP? That's asking for trouble. Personally, I blame Sheryl Crow. (note: I had to use this link for use of the word 'loo') (note2: sorry Ugly Head, Rooney gets a pass on this one)

Take the amount given? Not if you have an incident like this guy. Of course, in his case, he didn't really need TP.

And now:
