From 12th to 8th

Normally, that's not much to celebrate. In NASCAR, it usually means a few more points and a little more money. In golf, it means a little more money. In football, it probably means a better bowl game.

In this case, it's a cause for celebration. Miss. State baseball lost the elimination game in the College World Series today. That will likely mean they finish 8th in the country overall (considering they were the first of the last eight teams still playing). Well, probably not in Baseball America's final poll, but don't put much stock in that.

What's amazing about this is that they started the season ranked 12th, out of 12 teams in the SEC. A team the rest of the conference considered an off-week (much like football) goes on to finish in the top 1/3 of the conference, then gets hot when it counts: the post-season.

In football, you have to win the conference to even be considered for the championship. In basketball and baseball, you just have to peak during the tournament(s).

Miss. State did just that. A 5-0 run through the regionals and super regional sent them to Omaha. A team that wasn't supposed to make a peep in their own conference overachieved big time and made some of the biggest noise of all.

A lot of people wondered how a 2 and 'que showing would be received. I don't think that there is anyone that follows the Diamond Dawgs that would be disappointed in this team.

Congrats Diamond Dawgs. Thanks for rekindling my interest in Bulldog baseball.
