Ladies,

Hi. My name is Andy. Now before you freak out and dismiss this as some creep trying to hit on you, wait and hear me out. I have a proposition for you. It's a near-guaranteed way to find that special someone.

First, a little background info. If you're wondering about me, I'm just a regular guy. Work 40 hours a week. Go to church regularly. Just a normal guy.

Second, about this proposition. It's fairly simple and takes little effort on your part. All you have to do is chat with me.

Note, I didn't say 'date' or even 'meet'. I've got a pretty good track record going of getting to know girls online and leading to them meeting someone and developing a relationship with that person.

Now you might be thinking 'ew, meet online', but I promise it isn't as creepy as it sounds. Each case has started out innocently, either through Facebook or Twitter. One instance through match.com. Simple chatting, messaging back and forth, posting goofy jokes.

Each time, it has led to private messaging, as in for your eyes only and not posted publicly, in the form of e-mail or texting. I'm talking friendly chatter here. Again, I must emphasize that there is nothing seedy or any type of ulterior motive.

You might be thinking to yourself 'self, this guy is nucking futs'. Well, I admit that I can be a bit goofy at times, but I could go into detail on how each case went. I won't here for space reasons, but am willing to share basic info.

1. "Meet" girl online. 2. Start chatting, messaging (all innocent friendly stuff). 3. Given private info from the girl (e-mail/cell number). 4. Extended period of time of banter back and forth. 5. Girl either meets someone or has already met someone and becomes closer to that someone. 6. I find out after the fact and go about my life.

So there you go ladies. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to help. Just let me know if I could be of any assistance.

My work e-mail account gets bombarded with spam. We've got a pretty good filter setup because very rarely does any of it make it to the inbox. There is a summary e-mail sent showing the messages that were blocked, which is good because there is the occasional legit e-mail that gets set as spam.

Lately, I've been posting various spam subject headers. 98% of them deal with boners. Well, too many spam e-mails and too little time kept me from post most of them. So here's a list of some of the better ones, broken down by day.

This morning, I got up a little earlier than usual. Not intentionally, but still, I'll roll with it. So I drag myself out of bed after a while and fix a bowl of cereal. Figure I would go ahead and goof off on the computer now so I can try and get ready and head to work a little early.

So I sit down, check e-mail and chuckle at Dilbert (whom I envy). Then it's to my Twitter feed reader (a handy little program called Yoono). Now first, a back story: Yesterday (Memorial Day, not at work), I notice that the work Twitter feed hasn't updated all day. Great. Of course, something would go wrong when I'm not there. When I first started reading some tweets, everything was okay. The same usual types: re-tweeting corny quotes, generic talk, etc. Still nothing from the work feed, but I wasn't thinking about that.

Then two bites into my cereal, BAM! A dump of tweets. It's like everything took Monday off as well and decided to start back to working this morning. Which makes absolutely no sense at all. The script that runs the process is fine. The server it's on, maybe had a problem. I wouldn't know. It was a holiday.

What I do know though is that multiple tweets were dumped on thousands of people at once. People don't like it. And I'm the guy that setup the whole process.

Setting up my 3-day weekend

Today begins a nice 3-day weekend for me. Taking the day off from work. I deserve it. Besides, it's for an important cause.

Me. Saturday is my birthday. I'll be thirty-five. Or as I like to borrow from an country song back in the day:

"Old enough to know better, but still too young to care".

So how am I going to spend my birthday weekend? I'm glad you asked.

Today is going to be 'get crap done around the house' day. I'm going to start by washing my car, 'cause it needs it. Then just little things around the house: wash dishes, clean up the bathroom, straighten up the bedroom. You know, things that have to be done that have been put off for the longest time. Before heading out of town, got to get a haircut. This mane is going crazy.

I'm hoping to get in a bike ride as well. Having gotten on the bike in a few months now. The weather is perfect for it, but the motivation is not. I'll also blame my thirty-five-year-old back for being a pain in the ... well, back, the past few weeks.

Was hoping to make it up to Starkville for the final spring practice/walk through. Granted, it's not much to see, but it's as good a reason to head to campus as any.

Speaking of football, that's Saturday's main event. The Maroon/White spring game is Saturday evening. Nice of them to choose my birthday for Super Bulldog Weekend two years in a row. Not quite sure what all our plans are for Saturday, but the game is a must.

I know my parents are carrying me somewhere to eat, or at least I hope so. There will be cake. Oh yes, there will be cake.

Sunday will be just like any other Sunday. Will likely head to church with my parents. After, sit around the house for a bit. Then head back down this way early enough to head to church and see my crew.

So there you have it. That's how a single, thirty-five-year-old spends his birthday weekend. It's a celebration!

My opinion on the hot topic everyone is talking about

There's been one topic everyone has been talking about lately. I've stayed silent on it, because I don't want to get too carried away. It's an emotional topic. People take it very seriously. You have one side that will defend their opinion on it and people on the other side that disagree - at times strongly - and will let their voice be heard (sometimes in a negative light). I try not to, but my emotions do get the best of me at times when thinking about this. So now, I figure that I've had enough time to let things settle down a bit and calmly, rationally discuss this topic.

Of course I'm talking about Mississippi State athletics. The past couple of weeks have been a figurative kick in the nether regions.

First, there's the baseball team. Now I'm not going to claim to be a baseball expert or super fan. I want to see State excel in baseball, mostly because I know how big the program can be. The has had some struggles recently, losing to inferior teams. There are people that are furious that this is happening and want immediate change. There are others that are also upset, but consistently say that it's going to take some time to "right the ship", so to speak.

Why start with baseball? Well, because after the end of basketball season, most just turned their attention to the diamond, in hopes of seeing something in maroon succeed.

Yeah, MSU basketball. The whole season can be a microcosm of what it's like being a State fan. It goes something like this: "Hey, your team is pretty good. What? You lost to who? You suck. Hey, look at that, you're getting back to where you should ... More crappy losses? You aren't trying are you? Good luck salvaging this season? Wait. Who is that rolling through the SEC tournament? Uh oh. Look out. Someone is about to make a statemen ... oh. That must have hurt. Well, that's what we expect from you. Good luck next year. (snicker)"

A promising season, derailed by losses to inferior teams. A chance to salvage what little respect we might have had. Only to see it crushed by the smallest of margins. Then being insulted while injured, by having the crappy season relived through talking heads on national TV. Being "rewarded" with a minor consolation prize. Trying to re-focus and claim this consolation, only to have those hopes killed in the closing seconds.

Such is the cycle of MSU basketball, the hottest of the hot topics. Some are content with what we have. Some are pissed that we aren't better. Some are both. It's a constant struggle year after year. Those that want change were hoping that this would be the ultimate example they could offer.

Which leads to the final kick in the you-know-what. MSU is losing their athletic director. Greg Byrne, who in a short period of time changed the face of MSU athletics and provided hope for the future, is leaving for another job.

This news was unexpected. Maybe in a couple of years, we could see someone come in and hire him away, but not now. Just under two years on the job. As mentioned, in those two years, so much has improved. Can't help but think what would happen if he stayed for a couple more.

Those disgruntled with basketball were hoping Byrne could shake things up a bit. Now it's either going to remain the same or some new guy will come in and go in a completely different direction.

The annual basketball dive. Baseball sputtering. Now we lose our leader. It's a weird time for MSU athletics.

Oh well, at least football spring practice has started. A fresh start, filled with optimism. For now.

The afternoon of sweat

With the almost constant rain we've had for the past few weeks and work beating me down like a rented mule, I needed to get out and do something. So I did just that today.

Have not taken the bike out for a spin in about a month, mostly because of the rain. Partly because of laziness. Today was going to be different. So I started my day bright and early at the crack of 1 pm. When I said work was beating me down, I meant it. Especially last night.

After a bite to eat, I decided to take a stroll around the neighborhood. Just to get outside and get a little sweat going. And hoping that my laundry would be done and ready for the dryer when I got back. Step one, accomplished.

Grabbed all my stuff and got on the bike. Before when I went riding, I just made the rounds here in the neighborhood. Not this time. Let's go crazy. I tackled Thrill Hill and it's speed bumps. I can proudly say that I made it up the hill on the first leg of my trek.

On the other side of the hill is some back parts of Madison County that won't show up when you search for Madison. The back road I went on had some nice houses out there. Would have never guessed that. Made the loop out there, only had one dog chase me, and got back to the main road to head back up the hill.

Had the all clear both ways and got my speed up and made it over the first speed bump easily, the second speed bump not so and the third by walking. You could say I hit a wall, or more accurately, a hill.

Rested a bit before coasting down back towards the neighborhood. Made a loop through then back to the house.

No idea how long I was out, how far gone and all that. I'm not that hardcore of a biker.

Now to continue the afternoon of sweat by mowing the grass. Personally, I blame the neighbors, since they mowed today.

Then the plan is to go eat bar food and drink beer.

How to become a millionaire

I've suspected this for the longest time, and recent events have cemented my idea. Here's a fool-proof way to earn some serious cash.

First, it would help if you knew a little about relationships and/or human behavior. That's the central theme of the book you would be writing. Oh yeah, and you need writing skills. The subject of the book: me. The story: how to turn women off.

All you would need to do is to follow me around. Watch me as I interact, either physically or online, with the opposite sex. Take notes of what she says/does and how I react. Take notes of what I say/do and how she reacts. Then note the time it takes for the woman to completely ignore my existence. Find the pattern. Develop a thesis, of sorts.

I can hear someone now: "but Andy, why don't you do that yourself?". Well, don't you think that if I knew what I was doing or saying that turned women off, I would have stopped doing/saying it a long time ago? That's why I need a third party involved. An impartial observer that will still talk to me. Do you think these women are coming up to me and trying to coach me on how to correct my mistakes? I wish.

Hence the millionaire part. Someone does the research and figures this out, they will be rolling in bank.

All I ask for in return is a small percentage. And the notes of what I'm doing wrong.

A wrestling post

Or more accurately, a non-wrestling post. There used to be a time when I would freak out if I had missed any of the eleventeen wrestling shows that used to come on back in the day. For the handful of RSPW brahs that may see this, back when the newsgroup was worth a damn, I would spend most of my free time browsing around reading any bit of news I could find.

Something happened along the way. Either I grew up or the sport hit a stretch where it really really sucked (as well as Test). I don't know when the exact moment was, but there came a time when I didn't watch a single show. The DVR never got set to record anything wrestling related.

I will admit, I got sucked back in briefly for the return of Jericho. And when TNA was starting to become bigger, they had me hooked. I would record TNA whenever I could (Thursday night prime time > TNA), and if I happened to miss a show, go online to find out what happened.

WWE, not so much. Never got back into it. Guess it was the lack of Jericho. Though their Saturday night show RAW AM has kinda gotten my attention lately. Mostly because it's on when I'm trying to sleep.

I guess it's just the wrestling cycle that has hit me and I'm in a downward stretch now. Haven't seen a lick of WWE or TNA in the last month or so. Couldn't tell you anything about either company right now. There's nowhere online to go to get results, though I'm sure I'll get a couple of responses on that.

It's strange. In a way, I'm a bit upset that I haven't been keeping up more with what's going on in the squared circle. On the other hand, I get to thinking that I don't need to care that much and just go on with my business.

Personally, I blame HHH.

After a week of staying at a couple's house, I get to sleep in my own bed tonight. Had the evening planned out. My friends got back in town this afternoon. I could likely leave work a little earlier to head to their place, catch up, pick up my stuff and all that friend stuff.

That could have happened.

Instead, the new site I was trying to roll out wasn't cooperating. It took an hour just to see the changes on one page. That's not counting the other few hours spent copying and pasting, copying and pasting, copying and pasting, all because the sub sections couldn't use the generic template.

So after a few texts back and forth, I let them know that I couldn't make it to their house until the next day. No problem there.

My sister lets me know that I might need to feed her dog. Again, should be no problem. I've done that many times when she decides not to come home. (evil stare)

Oh, but tonight was different. Tonight, the dog left a nice present in the kitchen. A nice present that I had to clean up.

Let's just say that the smell is slowly dissipating.

Needless to say, this sent me off into a state of pissed off I haven't experienced in a while. There isn't proper verbiage in the human language to describe how pissed off I am. There isn't proper reward that can be given to me to make me feel better after this.

I would say I'm surprised, but I know better. Cue Ralph Edwards.

So I rode my bike today

One of my co-workers and an online buddy are really into riding their bikes. As in, almost every day.

Me? Not so much, but I am hoping to get into a habit of riding more often. Today could be that first step.

I've had this bike for a number of years now. At least 7 years, maybe more. I know, I know. I just can't recall which apartment I was living in when I bought it.

I'll state for the record now that I have never been a steady rider. Mostly casual riding whenever I felt like it. There was a time I would get with a friend and her family and go riding on the trails here.

But as with most things, it got put aside, I got lazy and forgot about it. When my sister and I moved into this house, I did ride around the neighborhood on occasion. But again, lazy, forgetful, it was left sitting against the garage wall collecting dust and whatnot.

Well, more talk lately from different people and the final realization that I need to do it led me to dust the ol' bike off today. I went around the neighborhood for a while. About 30 minutes. I waited until later in the evening when it was only mildly hot.

Status report: the tires still hold air, still rides good (did hit it with WD-40 just in case) and my butt was not prepared. The feeling has come back now. I couldn't tell you how many miles I rode or calories burned. I can only say that I sweated and felt the burn in my legs.

It might be next weekend before I get back on it, but I'll do my best to make sure I do.

Now to resist the urge to fry up some cheese sticks.

The Hangover

Lately, I would have a little overtime accumulated during the week. Which means that I could work a shorter Friday. Today was no exception. I had some extra time from the previous days and my plan was to leave work a little earlier.

Isn't there some saying about "the best laid plans ..."?

I had to take care of a few little tasks. On the surface, no big deal. Which is probably why I underestimated them and put them off during the day.

Well, when it comes time to work on these tasks, nothing goes as planned. A piece of code that I wrote probably over a year ago wasn't working. Why was it not working? That's still a mystery. The code is fine. It's been working each and every time it's been used over that year or so. The system that controls the code wasn't executing it properly. Why? Completely baffled on that one. Even the tech help that controls the system was baffled. And all that was needed was to display an image on a web page.

Then I had to make sure that some articles appeared on the site. Again, simple enough task. Only it's not so simple when there are no articles. Had to go through the whole process of finding/sending/editing/editing again. Takes a while.

But hey, at least I get paid overtime.

Oh, the title of this post. Yeah, you see, when I finally left work, what I wanted to do was go somewhere and drink. That's not exactly the best idea when it's just me and I'm not in a happy mood. So I decided to just head home, find some food and watch TV.

Until I got to the Madison exit. Driving past Malco, I decided that what I needed was to let loose in a way. So I pulled up and went to go see 'The Hangover'.

I can't think of the words to describe how funny this movie is. It's not 'check your brain at the door' funny. It's just flat out great.

I'm in a better mood now. If I could only have a night kinda like those guys had. Kinda.

Two shows that are must see TV

Thanks to ample free time on the couch in front of the TV, I've found two new shows that have earned record status on the DVR.

The first is Man vs. Cartoon on truTV. The concept is simple. Engineers are trying to recreate Wile E. Coyote's attempts to capture the RoadRunner. How can this be anything but awesome? And that's what it is: awesome. The show comes on Saturday nights (which means I can watch it live).

The other super awesome show that I've recently discovered is the International Sexy Ladies Show on G4. Do I really need to describe this to you? It's a show. It plays clips from other nations. It shows sexy ladies. This is the kind of show Al Bundy would approve of.

We've gotten some pretty strong thunderstorms the past couple of days. Lots of rain late last night and today in the metro area.

Which is why I chuckle every time I see some place running their sprinklers during a thunderstorm. Yeah, I realize they could be set on a timer and all that, but still, gets me every time.

And that's not the worst. Seeing sprinklers at a nearby neighborhood going on the day Katrina hit was the high point for me. Again, I realize the auto timer and all that, but wouldn't it make sense to say "hey, it's gonna rain, let's turn them off"?

Earlier tonight, Chevelle rocked at Fire. When the show was announced, I planned on going. This had the potential to be good.

And it was. Someone told me before it started that those three guys put out more noise than most bands. He wasn't exaggerating. It was loud. It rocked.

And I got to see it for free. w00t!

Metromix.com, the entertainment provider for the C-L, has a nice relationship with Club Fire. I had asked folks at work if I could be able to get in with a staff pass. They said I likely could.

And I did. Though next time, they need to have my name in advance.

The Three Stooges movie

Seriously? This is legit?

I saw this earlier on Yahoo and it read as if these actors were rumored to be starring as The Three Stooges. I showed a co-worker and he said the whole thing was a bad idea. Don't crap on the Stooges legacy. Plus, Hollywood has no more original ideas, but that's another rant.

As for the selections, I could maybe see Jim Carey as Curly. The mannerisms, if he tones it down a bit. The look? Nah, you probably need someone portly to be authentic. The article says he's going to put on some pounds to play the role, but I still have trouble seeing it.

Sean Penn? As Larry? He better do a phenomenal job after stealing the Oscar from Mickey Rourke.

Benicio Del Toro as Moe? The look, maybe. The acting? I have no clue.

This is setting up to be one end of the spectrum or the other. It's either going to be the most awesome thing ever or it's going to suck big time. I can't see any middle ground here.

Still, I'll likely go see it.

Yeah, I've already had my gripe session about this weekend. Get ready, 'cause I just need to vent again.

I'm really looking forward to the weekend in Memphis. Get to see friends I hadn't seen in years. Get to take an extended weekend. Get to go out of town. All things that I'm looking forward to.

I really really really wanted to make the parade this year. A chance to hang out with friends, drink some beers and have fun. This year would have been extra fun because I would get to be part of a parade float.

Things just didn't work out for me. There are other events coming up that I'm hoping I can work extra for. Plus, there's only 365 more days until the next parade.

Regardless, Memphis, here I come.

I watched the Watchmen

First off, let's get this out of the way. I am not a comic nerd. Don't come crying to me about how certain things weren't accurate to the comic or anything like that. I don't care.

In fact, I'll go one step further. I had never heard of the Watchmen until seeing the trailer posted on a message board. The comic geeks there were going crazy. I was 'meh', but this does look cool.

And it was. Since seeing the trailer, I have found out that this is based on a graphic novel. Supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, if you listen to the geeks.

Since I had never heard of it, I was just going to see what looked like an awesome action movie.

I'm not going to say I followed the story well. Probably couldn't repeat much of it now. Though I will say that it was interesting. A mystery to figure out, but more of the movie was setting up the story behind the mystery. At least, I think so. Again, no idea about the origins of this. I'm learning on the fly.

The movie was a really good popcorn, action movie, in my humble opinion. I might can be talked into seeing it again.

Pantry raid

Some time ago, I got on a Good Eats kick. A few times, I would try to make something that was featured on the show. A couple of examples, ribs and jerky. The jerky turned out good. The ribs were ok, mostly because it was the first time and I didn't have proper cooking utensils.

One theme Alton has done is 'pantry raid', where he takes various items from the fridge and pantry and whips up interesting concoctions. Today, I tried my own version.

Got some deer meat in the freezer, one pack of sausage and some burger meat. Recently, I cooked up a helping of the burger meat and made patties. Good, no doubt. Had a couple left over so they went in the fridge.

Today, I decided to use those two patties, but I didn't want burgers. So I thought I'd chop them up and throw them in a skillet to heat them up.

Wait a second, I've got various items in the cabinet that could be used to flavor the meat. Yeah, let's try this.

So here's what I did: a little Worcestershire sauce, pinch of salt, a dab of liquid smoke, squirt of honey and some old bay seasoning. Didn't measure, but I'd guess about a tablespoon or three of the combined mix was made. (side note: the Worcestershire sauce was homemade, but that's another story)

Poured the mix over the chopped up deer burger and let it sit for about an hour (couldn't wait, I was hungry). Medium heat on the skillet and cooked until it looked done.

I have to say, not bad for a quirky experiment.

More proof I'll never have it all

There's always something. Whenever I get an invite or am asked to take part in something really cool, there's always something that happens that cancels those plans.

Before I start my latest sob story, a recap of how we got here:

It'll be 10 years since I moved to Jackson come April. In those 10 years, there's one event that I've never experienced: Mal's St. Paddy's Day Parade. The first few years I was here, hadn't even heard of the parade. Then when I got my job at the paper, I saw the coverage it was getting. This looked cool.

Unfortunately, for the first few years, I wasn't able to go because I worked the graveyard shift and on weekends. There's no way to make a Saturday morning-into-the-afternoon event when you've been working all night Friday and have to work Saturday night as well. At least I had the pictures to look at while I was at work those nights.

A couple of years ago, my work schedule changed from nights to afternoons and a normal M-F week. Yay! I had Saturday's free!

But that still didn't help much, since I didn't know anyone that was going to the parade. Goes back to the whole 'I never get invited to the cool things' part of my life.

So after missing last year's parade, I vow to not miss another one. This year's parade is on March 21st. Not only was I planning on going, I was invited to be part of a float. That's right. My first parade experience was going to be walking the route handing out beads.

Now for the flip side of this story. The latter part of last year, I got a letter from my fraternity chapter at MSU. It was about the upcoming reunion party. Side note: the letter mentioned another reunion party some five years ago, but I don't recall getting that invite. I did get this one, so I thought this would be great. A chance to see old friends I hadn't seen in years.

I fill out the form, mail it in with my check and then start catching up with some of my brothers, mostly through FaceBook. Most of them had also gotten the invite and were thinking of going. Then once more people got to talking about it, the more interest there was.

This was turning out great. A chance to get away for a weekend, see some old friends. Awesome.

Recently, I made sure that I had those days off from work. No problem there. Then I was told about the chance to be part of a parade float. Sweet. This was going to be cool: reunion party one weekend, parade the next.

Until I looked at the reunion letter again last night and noticed that it's on the same weekend as the parade. Are you kidding me?!?!

Just like most other days in my life, as soon as it appears I might have good things come my way, there's the unforgiving kick right to the crotch. Such is my life.

I might not have completely wasted my week off, but I came close. Watched football, sat around the house, pretty much slummed.

At least I went out for New Year's Eve. I even have a picture.

It was taken here. First time I've been to an actual party like this. Sad, I know.

It was fun, though. The band could have been better. The smoky atmosphere could have disappeared. The free beer could have lasted longer. Still, we were there until closing time and didn't realize it. Then stopped by some co-workers' apartment for another hour. So yeah, NYE night, I had a blast.

Now it's time to prepare for work again. This won't be fun. I can just tell I'll have piles of requests waiting for me. Stuff that could have been done by someone else while I was out. But work wouldn't be the same if it didn't happen that way.

Oh, and maybe at some point I'll get some pictures posted and maybe redesign this blog. Gotta keep my reader(s?) happy.

You turn Santa Claus from a lovable, jolly guy into a douchebag. Way to kill the dreams of all the children in the world. "Yes she is!" What a choad!

And the Lost parody one, that one sucks so many ways, we have to come up with a new word to describe how hard it sucks. I can't fathom that much suck, so let's just say it sucks really, really hard.

First, you have someone devise a computer-like device to gain internet access. An amazing feat on a remote island. One survivor howls in excitement that they have a connection. Now they can call for he... Wait, what is ass-face doing? Why, he's using this opportunity to secure a credit card that he will use on A DESERTED ISLAND! Then, to everyone's amazement, he continues applying for a credit card instead of contacting help. I don't even want to know how he had access to a photo of himself from who knows how long ago.

And this photo and the event it leads to creates all sorts of ass-sucking suckiness. The photo is of ass-clown with a huge cheeseburger. One of the starving, delirious, BEEN STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLAND FOR WHO KNOWS HOW LONG survivors sees a cheeseburger and lunges forward. This breaks the make-shift monitor.

AND THE OTHER SURVIVORS GET MAD AT HIM AND RUN HIM OFF?!?!?!

I hope the alternate version of this commercial shows the non-asshole survivors forcing ass-face to repair the computer and connection, then bash his skull in and cook him over an open fire.

Yeah, this is what happens when I have too much free time.

There are new commercials out now from Keystone Light beer. The idea behind the commercials is that some guys aren't smooth, especially around women. No shocker there. I resemble that remark.

The commercial I don't like shows the girlfriend running into the guy at the store. She thought he was taking care of Grandma. He is, while he's at the store with a case of beer in his hand. Then one by one, the rest of the gang shows up with chips, more beer, etc.

Never mind the beer (or lack thereof), what kind of moron ditches a chance to be with the hot woman to hang with the guys?

A new era at Mississippi State

MSU has a new football coach. Dan Mullen, the former offensive coordinator for the Florida Gators. You know, the same Florida team that beat down Alabama. The same team that is going to battle for the championship. He might not be the guy responsible for all that, but he's the co-guy.

He's been coaching with Urban Meyer for his entire career. They go way back. Well, as way back as you can go for a 36 year old. Yeah, he's only a few years older than me. Odd.

By all accounts, he's a good one. Will he have MSU winning right off the bat? Probably not, but he's not going to coast along for a few years then decide to start working.

Along the same lines, MSU's new Athletic Director is a breath of fresh air. He's also 36 (I believe) and a real personable guy. I have a chance to meet and talk with him a number of times over the years. It's unreal what he's gotten accomplished in the few months he's been in charge.

Man, I can't wait for football season.

Finally. A work week from Hades is over. It was one that was sad and painful. More cuts had to be made. Some hard ones to take. I hate to sound like this, but considering the amount of work I've got ahead of me, I really wasn't paying much attention to it. It sucks, no doubt. Hopefully things can start picking up here soon.

Tonight starts the high school championship games. Weir would be playing today, if not for stumbling to Stringer in the first round. Crap.

Meridian and South Panola play for the 5A title. That should be a good game. I wish I could go. That is, I wish I knew someone at work had put my name down as one that is allowed in at no cost.

I've been trying to get caught up on my TV watching. It's taken a while, but I'm getting closer. Still can't find episode 2 of CSI: anywhere.

Also been trying to keep up with my blogging buddies. I noticed just before I started this post that Pink has finally posted something. Yay! My life has meaning aGAIN.

So yesterday, I let out some frustrations that it was time to let Croom go and find someone new to coach at State. I was kinda resigned to the fact that he would be back for another year. Then the news today that Croom resigned came.

Wow. That's all I can say is wow. I did not see this coming. I'm glad, though. It was obvious that he couldn't get the job done. Now let's see who AD Greg Byrne goes after. I won't get into rumored names or anything, but I'm confident that he will get a good coach.

Back in 2003, I was anxiously awaiting the announcement of MSU's next football head coach. There were all sorts of rumors of who it would be. The three names mentioned the most were Steve Spurrier, Jimbo Fisher and Sylvester Croom.

Spurrier was likely a pipe dream by the fans, though the stories I had heard seemed that there was some possibility that it could be a bit of truth there.

Jimbo Fisher was the offensive coordinator for LSU at the time. He was considered one of the up-and-coming coordinators that could become a head coach. There was a lot of talk that he was the guy and that he would bring in Will Muschamp in as defensive coordinator. Muschamp is also a good coordinator. He's currently leading Texas towards a possible BCS title.

The popular story is that Fisher wanted the job and was ready to accept the position. Only thing is, he got word that MSU was hiring someone else. So Fisher stayed at LSU, won a national title, then went to Florida State and is the head coach in waiting there. Muschamp was at Auburn, had monster defenses and is now the head coach in waiting at Texas.

MSU hired Sylvester Croom. He had been a position coach in the NFL for many years. The last time he was on a college sideline was during Bear Bryant's last few years.

So Croom is hired to take over the MSU program. Well, that is after he finished the 2003 season for the Packers.

Now it's 2008. Five years later, and where is MSU's football program?

21 wins, 38 losses. In conference play, 10 wins and 30 losses.

The numbers don't lie. He's failed a lot more than he's succeeded. Do I hate it for the guy? Of course. He's coaching my favorite team. I want to win.

It's Egg Bowl week. What does that mean? It means one of two things: 1) Mississippi fans having 51 weeks of bragging rights or 2) Mississippi fans not acknowledging you if you bring up the game their team just lost.

So let's jump into some of my Egg Bowl moments.

The first one in Oxford (1992), we get in the stadium and head to our section. As we walk up the aisle, we can't find the row number on any of the rows. We ask a guy sitting near us how he could tell he was on the right row and he said he had to count from the bottom up because none of them are labeled. On our way up the section, I lean over to tie my shoe and find the row numbers. They are on the steps. The steps are painted red. The numbers are painted red.

Either '92 or '94 up there, after a score, a cheerleader is running the giant MSU flag around the stadium. When he passes behind the Mississippi bench, a couple of players run over and grab the flag, yanking it away from the cheerleader.

Tommy Tuberville proclaiming 'we whipped their butts' after edging MSU 15-14. I believe that was also the year he brought the team out during senior introductions.

Having to sit in their student section in '94 (or '96? geez, I can't remember nothing now).

Being there in '98. From the low of Colonel Reb running through the middle of our band's halftime performance to the high of Dicenzo scoring on a flare pass late in the game. I found a sweet picture of this play taken from the end zone. You can see Tubs in the background with his hands on his head.

'05 running around like a fool showing off my 'Ole Miss Sucks' shirt after J-Rock won the game. I still wish I had a camera so I could have taken a photo of the two chicks kissing to try and get me to give them my shirt.

Yeah, I don't like Mississippi, their team, coaches and some of their fans.

This weekend was homecoming at MSU. That meant football mostly. Except this year, I decided to go back in time and visit the old fraternity chapter. Homecoming weekend is the big alumni event: Pig Pickin'. Smoked pig, fixin's, drinks, good times.

Everyone is blaming the late kickoff for the lower attendance. I think it had a part to play in it. They split the day in two, a lunch gathering and then the main event after the game. I got there that afternoon for at least a sammich before heading on campus. Found out that one alumni couple from before I joined had been there. Got to talk with some of the current members. Then the game and back for round two.

I kept thinking to myself, 'self, is there going to anyone there you know'? Then I told myself to shut up.

Well, turns out there wasn't anyone there I knew. The members I met earlier don't really count. But still, a good time was had. Got to chat with some members and pledges. Even did a little educating on the past. (no tales of uphill snow-walking though)

And did I mention the food? You can't beat pulled pork. The bonfire was nice and toasty on a cool night.

I had missed the last few, probably because I thought us old farts didn't need to show up. Then I realized last night, that this event was made specifically for us old farts. Next year, I'm going again. I'll even try to convince a few more old farts to go.

Homecoming

State's homecoming is tomorr^H^H actually, later today. Honestly, it doesn't mean much to me. A (supposedly) easy football win and another chance to head back to campus.

There's also the fraternity's alumni cookout. Sadly, the past couple of years, I skipped out on it. Not this year. I plan on being there, no matter how late it is. (stupid 6:00 kickoff time)

Pig Pickin'. That's the name of it the event. The fraternity is Theta Tau, an engineering fraternity, so don't go thinking I could ever get into one of those social frats. A group of wanna-be engineers getting together to cook a pig and build a bonfire. Good times, man. Good times.

This year is the 20th Pig Pickin'. My first one was in '94. Excuse me while I whimper about how long ago that was. You deserve the story of Pig Pickin'.

It started as a homecoming party for alums. How did it get its name? Simple. The crew back in '88 said "let's find a field, smoke a pig and build a bonfire". Voila. Done, done and done. I think they hired someone to cater the pig cooking, but it was pure and simple: one pig, giant grill for smoking, pick off what you want.

Over the years, the formula remained the same. Someone came and cooked the pig, we built a bonfire and stayed out in the outskirts of town until ... whenever.

(except for that one dark year when it was catered; bad times, bad times)

Towards the end of my career at State, the venue changed but the formula remained the same. Smoke a pig (at times, in a homemade pit), construct a massive bonfire and have a good time. Lately, a band has been incorporated. That's cool. We tried it one year I was there, but they weren't too keen on playing outdoors.

I'm going to this year's Pig Pickin'. I don't think I'll be the oldest alum there. At least, I hope not. I've seen announcements on Facebook that some folks I was in school with are going.

If only I was able to camp out there.

Haven't watched the CBS dramas yet, so I don't know who blowed up on Criminal Minds, how Mac escaped or what the heck is happening in Vegas.

The state fair is in town. And I haven't been yet.

I wish I could golf more often.

There's going to be a Wings Stop downtown, not too far from work. If they are open late, like the one in Ridgeland, I might say screw it and forget brown bagging it and spend what little money I have.
